The Case of the Sock That Was Already on the Foot

Detective Bea received the missing-sock report at nine. By nine-oh-five, the living room was a crime scene with excellent labeling.

Professor Duck interviewed the laundry basket, which remained discreet. Bea followed a trail of lint toward the sofa and announced a breakthrough.

The breakthrough was another sock, unrelated to the case.

Their client watched anxiously from the armchair. Bea asked for a detailed description of the missing item. Blue, striped, very familiar.

Professor Duck looked down.

The sock was on the client's foot.

Bea paused, then declared the recovery exceptionally successful because the item had never left the premises.

The client thanked them.

The invoice listed observation, investigation, and a modest charge for not making a big deal about it. Professor Duck waived the last charge immediately.
