First Contact With a Planet That Is on Another Call

A fictional comedy from CyberBabiez. The characters and events are invented.

Captain Lulu rehearsed humanity's first greeting twelve times. She selected a diplomatic wave, polished the microphone, and opened communications with Planet Plink.

'Your civilization is important to us,' said Plink. 'Please continue holding.'

The waiting music was a flute attempting the same three notes. Lulu orbited twice. Her computer suggested conquering the flute.

At last a receptionist answered. 'Is this about your moon subscription?'

Lulu explained the historic nature of the encounter.

'Lovely. I'll put you through to Historic Encounters.'

Another flute began.

By dinner, Lulu had memorized the tune and composed a harmony. Plink immediately hired her to improve its waiting music.

Her mission report read: First contact successful. Cultural exchange established. Invoice outstanding.

The computer, which had submitted a poem instead, was still on hold.
