The Alien Ambassador Is Three Hats in a Coat

The ambassador arrived wearing a magnificent coat and three hats stacked vertically.

Lulu offered a chair. The ambassador collapsed into a tidy pile.

'We should explain,' said the bottom hat.

Their planet was inhabited entirely by headwear. They had studied human photographs and concluded that coats were required for meetings. Nobody had explained the person inside.

Lulu apologized for the chair and fetched a coat rack.

Diplomacy improved immediately. The top hat discussed trade. The middle hat requested better weather forecasts. The bottom hat wanted to know whether a baseball cap could become a crown through hard work.

Lulu said she wasn't qualified to answer constitutional questions.

They signed a friendship treaty anyway.

The official photograph looked like an unattended hallway, but everyone agreed it captured their best sides.
