The words beneath Roo's broadcast normally moved with great authority. Today they read: Still a room.

Then: Sofa remains sofa.

Then: Anyone else tired?

Roo stopped mid-sentence. 'Who is writing those?'

The ticker admitted it had exhausted the day's developments.

'We could leave the bottom of the screen empty,' Kit suggested.

The ticker was horrified. It had never considered unemployment measured in pixels.

They offered it a new role displaying viewers' tiny good moments.

Found a pencil. Nice cloud. Someone remembered my name.

Soon the ticker moved more slowly because people wanted time to read.

Roo finished the bulletin without interruption.

The final message appeared beneath him: Taking a short break. Back when something needs saying.

For once, nobody mistook the empty space for a technical fault.
