Nib returned the soup because it was too soup-like. The waiter asked which particular aspect troubled him.

The chef thickened it. Now it was suspiciously confident. The chef thinned it. Now it lacked ambition.

Mr. Buttons suggested that Nib might simply not want soup today.

Nib considered this a personal attack on his qualifications. He had reviewed soup yesterday and enjoyed it enormously. Surely the soup was responsible for any change since then.

The chef offered an empty bowl. Nib studied the clean lines, the absence of pressure, and the excellent spoon access.

At last, a dish that understood him.

The review praised the kitchen's willingness to listen.

The chef read it while eating the perfectly good pretend soup and decided to stop taking everything so personally.
