Pip Retires for Exactly Eleven Minutes

Pip announced his retirement after a demanding morning of pointing. He would spend more time with his family of toy vehicles and pursue his lifelong interest in the window.

Mr. Buttons gave a warm speech. The duck presented a card signed by everyone, including a suspiciously literate truck.

For eleven glorious minutes, the nursery operated without an executive. Blocks were stacked. Questions were answered. Nobody rang a bell.

Pip found the efficiency unsettling.

He returned as a consultant, which meant he could offer instructions without being asked to tidy anything. Mr. Buttons thanked him and assigned him a consultation on the empty toy basket.

Pip studied the problem. The solution appeared to involve putting toys inside it.

Retirement suddenly sounded appealing again.

The duck kept the card. It suspected they would need it tomorrow.
