Pip's Out-of-Office Reply Has Conditions

Pip's out-of-office message announced that he was unavailable until further notice. For urgent matters, please contact Mr. Buttons. For extremely urgent matters, please do not contact Mr. Buttons because he was also tired.

The message included a list of emergencies: missing duck, suspiciously empty cup, or somebody enjoying something without Pip.

Everything else could wait.

Three minutes later, Pip checked his inbox. Nobody had written. He found this disrespectful to the importance of his absence.

He sent the staff a reminder that he was unavailable, followed by a request to confirm receipt.

The bear replied, Enjoy your break.

Pip called to clarify that it was a strategic retreat. Then he called again to ask what a retreat was.

By afternoon, the office had received more messages from the absent boss than from the present one.
